Who is Kapil Sibal?

Kapil was born in Jalandhar in Punjab and is a well known Indian lawyer, politician, writer, and public servant. Sibal started his legal practice in 1972 where he was offered an appointment into the IAS but he turned it down so that he could concentrate on practicing law. In 1983 he worked in the office as Senior Advocate and later ADG in India (Additional Solicitor General) in 1989-90. In the 1990s and early 2000s (and later, in 2024-25), he was also chosen three times as the President of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

Kapil did his early school life in St. John High School in the city of Chandigarh and studied there in the early sixties and later transferred to Delhi in 1964. He later trained at St. Stephen?s College, University of Delhi and got a B.A. (Honours) and M.A. History degree by the late 1960s. At the same time, he studied a Bachelor of Laws LL.B. at the University of Delhi, Faculty of Law, and received a degree in 1972. He later continued his education in Harvard Law School where he studied abroad and received his LL.M. (Master of Laws) in 1977 after practicing law and turning down an offer of an IAS. Kapil started his life career by joining the legal field in 1972. In the same year (1973), he was offered to join Indian Administrative Service (IAS) which he refused and started practicing law on his own. He was made a Senior Advocate of Delhi High Court in 1983. Between 1989 and 1990, he worked as Additional Solicitor General of India. In 1998 Sibal was elected into politics when he was nominated into the Rajya Shaba representing Bihar. In 2004 and 2009 he was elected to the Lok Sabha, representing the Chandni Chowk constituency.
